School
Buses
Jordan School District
Jordan operates
approximately one-third of its bus
fleet on natural gas, and is the only
district in state using an
alternative fuel.
Sevier School District
Sevier School District recently
purchased its first natural gas
school bus
Other districts are regularly
approached about alternative fuels,
with some expressing interest in
biodiesel. School districts, also,
are ideal candidates to adopt an
"anti-idling" policy. EPA
distributes a short video on the
benefits of
reduced idling.
Pollution Report Card
A comprehensive study of the
nation's 454,000 school buses.
Results show that exhaust from diesel
fuels can aggravate asthma, lung
disease and cancer. Because of their
size, children are especially
vulnerable. In 1998, more than 3.7
million children-about one in 20-had
asthma. The report also provides an
evaluation on the nation's school bus
fleet. Each state was evaluated. The
level of emissions from a natural gas
school bus set the bar for the
highest grade, an "A". No
state even came close to receiving
this grade for superior pollution
performance.
